      <image:title>Our Story - Working with Communities</image:title>
<image:caption>While the foundation of PIRI’s work is in the archaeology and anthropological research that Edmundo has developed for over 50 years, PIRI has sought to impact the local communities and the public in a variety of ways. During their expeditions PIRI has left AED’s (Automated Portable Electronic External Defibrillators) in Rapa Nui, Raivavae, Hiva Oa, and Pohnpei. These life saving devices have benefited these remote communities that have little access to healthcare. In Raivavae PIRI provided crucial access to archival documents that settled a decades long land dispute, empowering the local community and supporting justice for indigenous peoples.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Our Story - Projects</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2013 PIRI helped found and sponsor the Friday Harbor Film Festival, a festival dedicated to documentaries with a social and environmental message. Still running, the festival has supported several documentaries dealing with the themes of the Pacific region. In 2019 The Rapa Nui Planetarium was completed, a long time dream of co-founder Edmundo. With the help of PIRI funds were raised to have this amazing resource for further research and understanding of the connection between astronomy and ancient cultures of the Pacific. The Observatory is under construction, plans are complete and foundation is laid. Lynn is currently renovating the historic Aloha Theatre in Hanapepe, HI. A small museum and atrium is incorporated as part of the project. Both will be curated by PIRI, dedicated to Polynesian plants, (with storyboards) culture, art and history. Because it is an important landmark for the West side of Kauai, there will also be a photographic series of historical west side photos throughout the building on a rotating basis.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Papua New Guinea - Lost in Time</image:title>
<image:caption>Papua New Guinea is home to a rich diversity in indigenous groups and languages. While we know the material record stretches back 50,000 years there is little data that can help us understand a full chronology. The team launched this endeavor with the large amount of background research done by project partner and co-lead Dr. Nancy Sullivan. For 18 years Dr. Sullivan established a foundation of ethnographic fieldwork as well as a survey of over 150 cave sites in the region. Tragically Dr. Sullivan died in a car crash in 2015, but we continue our work and mission in her memory. This expedition was supported by Antonio Cruz Mayor, the International President of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, The John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and National Geographic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Papua New Guinea - Past and Present</image:title>
<image:caption>For the indigenous groups in the area caves are believed to be the source of ancestors, imbued with intense symbolism and supernatural power. With the help of over 20 local guides and field assistants the team was able to incorporate both formal and informal ethnographic insights and traditional knowledge in understanding these sites.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Papua New Guinea - First Contact</image:title>
<image:caption>During Edmundo’s survey of the caves in the Awim region he chanced upon the Meakambut, a previously uncontacted culture. Later Dr. Sullivan returned with a team from National Geographic (Edmundo is referenced as her “advance team” in the article) which produced this magazine piece published in 2012.</image:caption>

Generally they are located around major waterways in the most fertile parts of the valleys with the largest concentrations around ceremonial structures. Here team member Alexandra Edwards is recording geometric petroglyphs at Kahuvai, Nuku Hiva.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Micronesia - Enigma of the Heavens</image:title>
<image:caption>While there is ample scholarship and oral history tradition dealing with celestial navigation among Caroline Islanders, little is known of the connection between the archaeological structures of their fore-bearers and the night sky. Using GPS, and the iOS application Spyglass, the team documented megalithic structures taking measurements, orientation and cardinal directions. Various constellations and equinoxes indicate the change of seasons, marking important ceremonies and rituals performed in these large structures. For example the team took many measurements at the temple complex Menka on Kosrae, a ceremonial site dedicated to the breadfruit cult deity Sinlaku.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here Capt. Lynn Danaher is at Ahu Tongariki, the first area of focus that the team documented in order to understand how priests would observe the celestial signs to announce changes in seasons and their ritual calendar. The second location was Papa Vaka Papa Moa, located at the interior of Hanga Hoonu Bay where some petroglyphs carry astronomical names connected with the lunar cycle. The third was Ava o Kiri, a sacred dwelling place of paramount chiefs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In addition to the 3 main areas of focus the team documented additional sites on the island. Here are the petroglyphs at Orongo, depicting images connected with the Tangata Manu ceremony of the ‘Bird Man Cult.’ This was a ceremony conduced in later times after the construction of the Moai, in preparation for choosing a chief where young men would swim to the treacherous hatching grounds of the sooty tern from the islet Motu Nui (in the background of the photo) and scale back up the cliffs to Orongo with an egg.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Raivavae 2006 - Marae</image:title>
<image:caption>The most prominent archaeological structure on Raivavae are the Marae. They are comprised of megalithic stone architecture indicating a sacred ceremonial site, altar, or burial ground. Generally they are large cleared areas (in many Polynesian languages Marae translates to a place without vegetation) bordered by large stones sometimes with a central stone called an ahu.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Raivavae 2006 - Big Questions</image:title>
<image:caption>Edmundo’s expedition in the early 80s was the first complete archaeological survey of Raivavae. The overarching research question establishing a chronology of Polynesian colonization and dates on each island is an ongoing goal. Data from neighboring islands suggest early settlement around 8th century CE but it could be much earlier. As with many sites in Polynesia, finding datable material is a challenge. This is why identifying settlements where carbon samples and soil cores can be collected was a goal of this expedition. House mounds like the one pictured on the left are a good example As with all the PIRI expeditions local collaboration was extremely important. During Edmundo’s research he was able to bring back a primary document from the 1920s that reinstated land rights for local families empowering the community.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Raivavae 2015 - Identifying different Marae</image:title>
<image:caption>On Raivavae the team conducted a wide survey and typology of different marae, the most prominent archaeological feature on the island made of large stones. A location of chiefly power in ancient times, some also are thought to have ceremonial or religious features. Out of 63 identified they were observed to have paved open courts/ramps, unpaved enclosed courts, paved enclosed courts, an ahu (shrine), a paved approach, or some combination.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Raivavae 2015 - New Methods</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the goals of the expedition was to remeasure points taken in Edmundo’s 1987-1991 survey which used a magnetic compass that produced some unreliable data due to magnetic anomalies in the soil. The 2016 measurements were taken with a Brunton high-quality magnetic compass with an up-to-date magnetic declination, as well as 3-4 digital giro compasses, a GPS, and an application called Spyglass on iPhones and iPads. This data was provided to astronomers Francisco Förster and Elise Servajean from the University of Chile who went over the readings together, considering both an ethnographic and astronomical interpretation of our findings.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Easter Island 2010 - Tupa</image:title>
<image:caption>On Rapa Nui one of the important archaeological structures are circular stone towers called Tupa. Different theories have existed about Tupas, including the possibility that they could have been used as astronomical observatories, so one of the key goals to this expedition was to map out tupas and investigate this hypothesis. This illustration shows an archetypal Tupa on the island’s Northern coast done during the expedition of Jean-Francois Compte de La Pérouse in 1786.</image:caption>

The British sailors who came to covet their new lives in Tahiti, rejecting military discipline and ‘western values’ of the time. The goals of the expedition are to cast light on the untold story of the Polynesian captives who accompanied the mutineers to Pitcairn, employing physical anthropology and oral history methodologies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rapa Nui is a place where the sky, the stars, the earth and the sea all intersect with great meaning for the Rapanui people since their arrival. PIRI has taken the initiative to assist is creating the dream of Edmundo Edwards; to erect a Planetarium on Rapa Nui, completed in 2019. A companion Observatory is currently under construction, a telescope has been donated, the building has been designed and the foundation laid. Both facilities will be a place where this ancestral knowledge can be shared with the Rapanui people, communicated to visitors. Above all, taught to young people from across Polynesia creating pride of their remarkable navigation skills and cultural heritage. The project is led by Edmundo, he has managed to surround himself with a first class team guaranteeing the project will be successful. The Rapa Nui Planetarium has already hosted numerous students from Rapa Nui, Chile and Tahiti, winning awards, and sharing in their ancestral heritage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The 90 plus artificial islets of Nan Madol made of massive basalt columns served as both residences and ceremonial complexes. The lower city, Madol Pah, was the administrative center, while the upper city Madol Powe, was the ritual center of the complex. In 2016 Nan Madol was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet many fundamental questions remain. Based on survey findings from their 2017, PIRI expedition leader Lynn Danaher wants to conduct salinity tests in different areas of the complex.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Micronesia (upcoming) - Origins at Kosrae</image:title>
<image:caption>This expedition will also include a visit to the ancient Menka ruins on Kosrae, a large site spread thru out a valley deep in the jungle well away from the shoreline. Menka is made primarily from large boulders, estimated to be over 2,000 years old. There will also be a journey to the Leluh ruins made from columnar basalt stacked in a very precise way. Leluh was completely built by adding extensive landfill onto a shallow reef. It is from a much later time, approximately 1100-1400 AD. Both are amazing examples of these very unique complex structures found thru out the islands of the Pacific, attesting to the ability of these islanders to amass great man power. The team will do several salinity tests.</image:caption>
